Overcoming Opioid and Alcohol Use With Medicated Assisted Treatment

Different medications can be used to help individuals who struggle with alcohol or opioids. Opioids are drugs which include heroin, fentanyl or prescription painkillers (oxycodone, hydrocodone or morphine). Medications such as methadone and buprenorphine are opioid medications that are used to treat people struggling with opioid use, but they are not right for everyone. Many individuals striving toward recovery want to avoid opioids altogether.

What is injectable naltrexone (brand name Vivitrol®)?

Naltrexone is a medication that treats people struggling with alcohol and/or heroin and other substances. Naltrexone blocks the ‘high’ of opiate drugs and alcohol, so many people find they no longer want to use these substances. It is available in pill form, as well as an injection given by a nurse once a month.
