Teens In Control is a program developed by Shelly Dutch, Director and Founder, for teens that have had difficulty with drugs and/or alcohol. As a result of Shelly's commitment to help young people feel important and worthwhile, she has incorporated recovering youth mentors in groups and presentations to motivate other teens to make better choices in their young lives. Teens are valued and respected in their treatment, and, therefore, learn to believe in themselves and take responsibility for their choices and actions. Shelly and the staff at Connections are passionate and committed to each teen and their families. For teens that aren't ready to commit to this kind of program, we offer the Contemplator's Group.

This outpatient,
comprehensive,
& holistic program includes:

Assessment

The assessment process involves the evaluation of concerns, motivation for treatment, family issues, and the seriousness of the problem. A primary drug and alcohol counselor will be selected, and both the teen and their parent(s) will meet to determine a course of action, which will include individual and group therapy.

Individual therapy

One-on-one time helps the teen to manages issues of addiction, temptation, self-awareness and recovery. Each teen is involved in at least 12 weeks of individual therapy with their primary drug and alcohol counselor, learning to experience life without drugs or alcohol, in a healthy and positive way.

Group Therapy

Group Therapy takes place over a minimum of 12 weeks, with "graduation" taking place after a period of 90 days sober. Group sessions involve:

Family Support

Initially, the counselor will meet with the entire family to focus on negotiation skills and devise a contract with specific criteria for both parents and teens. The Parent/Teen Contract is a key component to the program. If Family Therapy is needed, we will refer to our Family Therapists for continuing support. We recommend parents be involved in the Parent's Group to enhance communication and focus on re-establishing trust.

Fun & Friends

Fun should be a major part of a teen's life. It's essential to learn how to have fun without using drugs or alcohol. We organize group activities, such as hiking at Devil's Lake, ropes courses, bowling, roller-skating, parties, music events, and more. Our beautiful location provides walks along the river, as well as kayaking, which are an important part of our program. By providing environmental and spiritual growth, the kids learn vital coping skills necessary in everyday life.

Follow-Up

Once a teen has completed the Teens In Control program successfully, follow-up care is on a monthly basis. Teens are also invited to attend groups at no charge. Those who have been sober for 90 days are encouraged to speak at schools and other agencies to enhance their recovery and help others.
